Seen by over 25 million people, one of the biggest musicals of all time brings to life the beloved "tale as old as time" with a burst of theatrical magic. Disney's tale on the classic fairy tale follows the story of a small-town girl, Belle, who is taken prisoner by a reclusive Beast, who is actually a human prince under a spell. Within the confines of the Beast's castle, they both eventually learn the true meaning of love and friendship together with the Beast's league of enchanted household objects. Through all of this is the vain and arraogant huntsman, Gaston, vying for Belle's affections.

Notes:
Reception with the artist on May 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. “This show at Talento Bilingüe de Houston consists of paintings from my Line or Continuity series and my current work with Flags. Continuity is an open series where I keep adding more and more images as I paint. It is basically a set of contemporary portraits of members of my family, people in American History and Latin American History, and people in popular culture both American and Venezuelan. I consider this series a type of installation, where the paintings are hung side by side touching each other creating a continuous viewing of the images. The paintings can be hung on top of each other and also placed on the floor, hung in groupings, or hung in a more conventional manner. It changes from space to space and from show to show. Banderas is a large format series of paintings that deal with the symbolism found in different world flags (American, Mexican, and Venezuelan). The images also deal with social and political issues as well. I also combine visually some of these flags to create new flags and in turn new symbols and meanings.

Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn; Dr. Allen Hightower, Conductor
Notes:
“From Darkness to Light” is both a celebration of life and the embracement of death, using classic religious texts for the narrative. We journey through time with three settings of the Gloria text from three different eras (Vivaldi 1678-1741, Poulenc 1899-1963, and contemporary Texas native Randol Bass). Each version celebrates, in its own way, the coming of the savior as the light of the world. Houston Masterworks Chorus is excited to present the Bass Gloria, because it showcases the talents of a contemporary Texas composer. To some, choral masterworks are seen as old or stale, because so many were written centuries ago. With the Bass Gloria, Houston Masterworks Chorus has the opportunity to demonstrate that choral masterpieces include the works of living composers, written in the last decades. The requiem mass with Lux Aeterna (light eternal) couples the Catholic mass for the dead with a celebration of the promise of eternal life. Elijah is the most dramatic work of the season. It is the story of the prophet Elijah who challenges darkness and celebrates the light. Each of these concerts will showcase traditional choral masterworks, using voice, organ and orchestra to engage Houston audiences with these classical treasures. To purchase tickets please call (713) 529-8900.
