Photographs in the exhibit have been selected from the Museum's Cecil Thomson Collection of over 800 of his works. These photos were acquired by Jesse H. Jones and were given to the Museum by the Houston Endowment, Inc. in 1952 and 1956. The exhibit also features contemporary photographs that are paired with their historic counterparts to tell the story of the growth and the incredible impact that changes in industry and technology have had on Houston and the surrounding regions. Several period artifacts have been chosen to be displayed to help tell the story of the period.

The Guaranty Bank Tour de Houston began as an idea that came to the Mayor from State Senator Rodney Ellis who participated in a five Burroughs ride in New York City. He enjoyed being able to see the historic areas of New York by bicycle and thought that Houston’s historic districts could offer bicycle enthusiasts a great experience as well. Mayor White loved the idea because it provides a wonderful civic bonding experience for Houstonians and also promotes clean air and a healthy lifestyle. The end of the ride will culminate with an after event party at City Hall in Hermann Square. This was very well received in previous years and will again feature free food and drinks, staged entertainment, and information booths.

The Shell Houston Open
Purpose:
The Houston Golf Association is well known for its charitable fund-raising. Since 1974 its volunteers have generated more than $51.6 million for local worthy causes. Promoting golf for the benefit of local charity has long been HGA's mission statement. The HGA raises money for charity through the Shell Houston Open PGA TOUR event in three distinct ways: Net proceeds from tournament revenues. These funds are usually targeted for the tournament's Core Charities who supply workers for the event. Direct contributions through the Charity Partners program in which $30,000 of a $65,000 sponsorship fee is allocated for agencies chosen to receive those funds by the sponsor. Nearly 200 different organizations have received funding through this program. Click here to view a list of the most recent beneficiaries.
Notes:
Collecting the monetary pledges that participating organizations in the Birdies for Charity program secure from donors. HGA provides collateral material for non-profit organizations to use when they solicit pledges based on the number of birdies made by competitors in the Shell Houston Open. All of the collected pledges go to the participating organizations.
